Party planning

Party bag alternatives that don't end up in the bin

Most party bags follow the same script: a few lollies, a balloon and a handful of small plastic toys that are lost or broken within a week. Here are some ways to send kids home with something that lasts.

What makes a party favour worth keeping

Kids keep things they made, things they use and things that mean something. A favour that ticks one of those boxes beats a bag of bits every time.

Ideas that last longer than the car ride home

A few alternatives to the traditional party bag:

  • Something they made at the party: a painted keepsake, a decorated cap, a bead bracelet.
  • One useful thing instead of five small ones: a good book, a drink bottle, a pack of quality pencils.
  • Seeds or a seedling to grow at home.
  • A photo from the party, printed on the day.
  • An experience: the activity itself is the gift.

Our pick: a favour they paint themselves

We started CritterPals because of a bin of forgettable plastic toys at a market. Our party pack gives every guest a blank, bendy critter to paint at the party. It's the activity while they make it and the favour when they leave.

Because each one has magnets hidden inside, it ends up on the fridge holding the next drawing, not at the bottom of a drawer.

One purchase instead of two

A party pack (minimum 6, free NZ shipping) replaces both the craft activity and the party bag. Add paint markers (one set per 3 kids) and a mess kit per kid if you need them.

Questions parents ask

Do I still need party bags?
No. The painted critter is the take-home gift, so there's nothing else to buy or fill. Some parents add a slice of cake or a lolly.
How much does it cost?
It depends on how many critters you choose (minimum 6) and whether you add paint marker sets or kids' mess kits. Every pack ships free within New Zealand, and the builder shows the total as you go. See prices and build your pack →
What age is it suitable for?
Ages 6 and up, with an adult supervising. The critters contain magnets and small parts, so keep them away from younger siblings.
