Party ideas by age

Party favour ideas for 9 to 12 year olds

By 9 to 12, kids are quick to spot anything that feels babyish. Favours that let them show off a bit of skill and personality go down far better than a bag of plastic toys.

What works at this age

Older kids enjoy a creative challenge. A blank critter is a canvas for detail: patterns, logos, characters from games and shows, inside jokes with their friends.

Something useful wins too. A magnet that holds up their timetable, a poster or a photo in their room is something they'll keep using.

Make it a bit competitive

A light challenge keeps this age group engaged:

  • Vote for the funniest, scariest and most creative critter.
  • Set a theme: a band, a sports team, a video game.
  • Paint matching critters for best friends.
  • Give each critter a name and a backstory.
  • Take a group photo of the finished line-up.

Our favourite for this age

The T-REX and the eagle are our two biggest critters, with the most room for detail, so they suit older kids who want to go all out. Every guest paints one, and it goes home as the favour. Minimum 6, free NZ shipping.

Questions parents ask

Will older kids find it too young?
Not usually. A blank critter lets them paint whatever they like, and the detail they can add is what makes it fun at this age.
What should the kids paint with?
Acrylic paint markers. They grip the smooth plastic and there are no brushes or water pots to manage. Ordinary felt-tips and washable markers smudge and won't stick. Our marker sets have 8 colours, and one set covers about 3 kids.
How much does it cost?
It depends on how many critters you choose (minimum 6) and whether you add paint marker sets or kids' mess kits. Every pack ships free within New Zealand, and the builder shows the total as you go. See prices and build your pack →
